Education.

My article is called “International students: can we do more to welcome them?” The article u can read here. The title of this article is the question. I think that this problem is very urgent not only in foreign countries, but in Russia, too. Indeed, this is a very  urgent problem in our university, because we have a lot of foreigners who, I think, has problems as it describes in this article.
This article was printed in Guardian Professional paper. The main topic of this item is “Do foreigners have any problems when they come to foreign universities, and how can students communities or social programs help them?” We can read here, that most problems for international students are: new surroundings, new peers and a high level of academic expectation”. And this problems are actual everywhere. There is the question before teachers: What really is the best way to make international students feel welcome and settled in?”The author of this article calls us that some universities try to develop programs which help international students to join the university community.  There are University of Edinburgh Warwick. We can read the opinion of Chinese student Xin Qu, who talks that it’s very difficult for her to leave home, to move into foreign country and to join in the internal society. It’s her challenge.

Fadi Dakkak noticed that there are a lot of problems which consists with the main big problem. And, first of all, there is a “cultural differences”. The blogger writes in this article that "It's not just Chinese students who don't mix – Brits also tend to stick together." I think that the first thing, that teachers and people who are accountable for international cooperation or exchange must do, is to unite young people. It will be more easy for them to study and to live with other young people, if they feel some supporting, for example. It’s very difficult for international young students to live abroad, far away from home, and it’s correct that such programs are developing. I think that such problems as loneliness and fear young students before uncertainty of university life will disappear in the nearest future.
That's my opinion about this important, I'm sure, problem. And I want to ask you:
1.what would you do, if you were in shoes of a teacher?
2.what would you do when you become a teacher and there will be the situation with international students?
Your opinion is very important=)

  1. Great work, Dasha!
The only word I can say is: “Wow”. You have chosen a wonderful article. As the problem of how to make the life of international students better and to help them to socialize in a new country and university is really important. I completely agree with your words that the problem is really urgent today all over the world. I cannot but agree with the words written in the article that most problems for international students are: “new surroundings, new peers and a high level of academic expectation”.
This very topic is closely connected with my life. As you know that I’m an international student, without looking on the fact that I have arrived from the near abroad. And the first days at our university were really stressful: I was far away from my native country, my parents and friends. In whole, I could say, I was away from my previous life. I was alone in a large country not knowing where to go and even who to talk with. I was to start all over again. My whole life…From the very beginning…With the help of you, my group-mates, I felt at home! And I think I have to tell you thank you for that.
I knew (only a little bit) Russian language and that was enough to understand what people were talking about. But there are many international students in our university that aren’t even able to communicate with Russian students. I wouldn’t like to put myself in their shoes. I think that I am just lucky that many people in Ukraine speak Russian language.
To my mind, first of all, the best way to help international students to adapt to a new surrounding and new people is to treat them kindly and to give them an opportunity to feel as if they belong there. They cannot be regarded as abnormal people.
And secondly, I think it is better to create so called “mixed groups” where Russian students and one or two international students could teach together, like we have in our university.
And if I were I teacher I would try to help an international student soever. As I know what does it mean to be an international student. That is my point of view!
